Oops!

I'd better post something before the search parties come out looking for me.

I'm having a bit of a sabbatical from SU due to work commitments, though I am about, I'm not stumbling or blogging for a while. Ain't it just rotten when real life gets between you and your computer's stumble button?

Tacky post
(Meaning slightly sticky = stays on first page somewhere).

Please do not adjust your eyes

For those of you not viewing my pages through Firefox, please forgive me for what you see. I'm experimenting with SU friendly CSS in an attempt to show some style to make up for the lack of substance in this blog. Only Firefox renders my efforts faithfully. The sexy curvy corners only appear in Mozilla and Firefox, IE has problems with alpha transparency in .png rendering, with garish results. *Update* IE7 seems to have solved the .png problem. Phew.

Cudos, respect, and thanks go to BosseJ, Bric9 and Pseudonym for their help and kind support when I was trying to figure out SU friendly CSS code.

Betamax to HD-DVD Converter

From the page: Behold the Colossus Of Analog/Digital Convergence!
Here at ThinkGeek, we fully grok that digital convergence is all the rage. We've been stocking cassette and vinyl and other analog to digital media converters for years now. And for some reason you keep buying. But we felt like we were leaving out some folks. Specifically, many folks that recorded home movies between the year 1975 and about 1984.

Yah. Handy format conversion, in time for summer dude. I've ordered one so I won't become obsolete :-)

Return of the Doctor

Bunlett demonstrates the latest modification to her evil army (Vista installation in a Dalek).
One can only hope that it has incompatibilities and crashes all the time like it does in PCs. (Click pic for why)

After an exclusive cinema-only run, we've now got the Doctor Who Series 4: Preview! Let us know what you think.

Series 4 of the latest run of Dr Who can't come soon enough to this house. If anything it might stall Bunlett's megalomaniacal tendencies long enough for me to finish my study of Brown snail predation in my back garden in peace. Though I doubt it somewhat.

Anyway, We are hoping that if the Beeb has put the trailer up on Youtube, and is showing it on TV, that we won't have much longer to wait.

Update: I will have to quote my friend Ian's response to seeing the above picture.

"Phew, the universe is safe, it took the stairs to defeat Daleks in the 70's
now it seems in a bid to integrate with Earth computer systems they've been infected with a virus, (masquerading as an OS);

A USB device plugged into this Dalek has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it. For assistance in solving this problem click this message.

Error Death Ray is not responding.
You have the following options:
Try disconnection an re-connecting Death Ray.
Search for updated driver for Death Ray
    Tell Microsoft about this problem?

Windows has detected the following devices attached to this Dalek
Death ray (not responding)
whisk thing (possibly duplicate device)
Sink plunger
Monoscopic and somewhat unwieldy imaging system (with cooling fins)
Flashing lights. "

Happy St Pat

Unhappy cat.

As you can see, festivities at Castle Thommond are in full swing.

I suppose it is a good thing that the Irish are lucky, Thamus will need all he can get if he gets too close to the cat.

It does not look like he finds the hat amewsing at all.

After all this time, I find I have been doing it wrong...

Yes, I know that these cartoons are just everywhere right now, but refreshingly, this page of them is not embellished with Russian porn. So if you have a new arrival, and it's siblings are seething with jealousy because of the attention it is getting, you can direct them here without any qualms.

The picture is huge, so avoid if you have dial up. Thanks to LittleGhost for the link

'απὸ μηχανῆς θεός'
(from the machine - god)

Carhenge, by Tim Hunkin. Click the pic for a deep link to downloads and links to 'The secret life of machines'

From the page:

The two sides of my life - researching stuff in books for the cartoon strip and making things, had made me realise just how much clever human activity in the world can not be explained in words or suit the format of a book, let alone fit with the publishing fashion of the day. The examples of this which seemed most immediate to me were the everyday machines around the home that everyone takes for granted. I've always enjoyed taking machines to bits and trying to mend them. It was always frustrating doing my cartoon strip about this sort of machine - it would be so much better if people could actually watch the machine working.

Tim Hunkin, on the first series of 'The secret life of machines' Jan 2004

Cartoonist, performance artist, engineer and inventor, Tim Hunkin is one of the few extraordinary and talented people who can make something as mundane as a washing machine interesting. I am not ashamed to say that he is a hero of mine, and there really aren't many of those. The review link will take you to his main site, but the picture will take you to a deep link on the TV series that he is probably best known for. Technology has changed since the three series of 'The secret life of machines' were commissioned in the late 80s and early 90s, but the programs are still interesting and a lot of fun. The mixture of engineering and off the wall British humour is utterly compelling. I suppose we have Hunkin to thank for genre spin offs like 'Scrapheap challenge' and 'Braniac' nowadays, but I prefer the originals.

The great news for the fans of the programs, is that you can still watch them by streaming over the 'net.
